Once such a match has been made, an application can be submitted for guidance and financial support for the upscaling issue. Innovations that contribute, for example, to better valorisation of side streams and residual streams from food production, or that help make new plant-based products such as meat and dairy substitutes tastier and healthier, will receive a boost as a result.
Food Pioneers Accelerator focuses on removing bottlenecks in the scaling-up phase for SMEs and SMIs in the southern Netherlands and Flanders. Suitable cases involve products that have passed the development phase and need to go through production-related steps to become a commercial end product.
What requirements must an organisation meet to be eligible for support?
- Located in the southern Netherlands (Zeeland, North Brabant or Limburg) or Flanders
- Independent
- Fewer than 250 employees and
- An annual turnover of up to 50 million euros or a balance sheet total of up to 43 million euros. If the company has been in existence for more than three years, its equity capital must exceed 50% of the issued capital.

What conditions must a scaling-up issue meet in order to be eligible for support?
- The innovation contributes to making the food chain more sustainable. Examples include the reuse of side streams and residual flows, making plant-based products such as meat and dairy substitutes tastier and healthier, and creating a more environmentally friendly or healthier production process.
- The lab or test phase has been completed and the developed product is ready to make the transition to a commercial end product.
- This concerns a technical upscaling issue, such as carrying out a trial production or resolving a feasibility issue.
How will we provide support?
Do your organisation and issue meet the criteria? Then we would be happy to get to work for you. After you have registered, we will contact you to discuss the issue together. We will then look for a production partner across the border who can carry this out. To apply for a grant, it is important that the collaboration is cross-border.
Once the match and budget have been established, an application for financial support can be submitted. We distinguish between two types of scaling-up projects:
- A small-scale project is a feasibility study with a budget between €25,000 and €125,000. It involves solving a technically feasible problem. Examples include questions about product sustainability, technology exploration or a specific production component.
- A large-scale project is a demonstration of trial production with a budget of between €125,000 and €250,000. This involves demonstrating pre-commercial production. For example, carrying out large-scale trial production to remove the technical obstacles to scaling up.
Food Pioneers Accelerator can contribute up to 65% of the above budgets. The subsidy can be applied to personnel costs or costs for external services and goods.
