Parana Materials takes next step in sustainable materials with investment from LIOF
LIOF is investing in Parana Materials, a new company spun out of Avantium and based at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. Parana develops high-performance polyesters based on biobased and circular raw materials for applications including consumer products, cosmetics and industrial applications.

The investment will enable the company to further commercialise its technology and grow as an independent business. At the same time, Parana will strengthen Limburg’s position in circular and biobased chemistry.
From technology to market
Parana Materials builds on technology developed and patented within Avantium over the past several years. As part of the spin-out, the relevant technology, know-how, projects, employees and pilot activities are being transferred to the new company.
The technology enables the production of high-performance polyesters using commercially available, biobased and circular building blocks. Some of these materials have already been scaled up to pilot scale. Parana is also working with international companies on the further development and application of these materials.
As an independent company, Parana will have greater focus and flexibility to bring its technology to market. The company can make use of existing industrial infrastructure, reducing the immediate need for large-scale new production facilities as it moves towards further commercialisation.

Growth potential and regional impact
For LIOF, it is precisely the combination of innovative technology, commercial potential and strong regional roots that makes Parana an attractive investment. Parana has not only developed a technology platform, but is already working with international partners on concrete applications. The next step is to grow the business from Chemelot and turn these commercial opportunities into further growth.
Jeffrey Lutje Spelberg, Investment Manager at LIOF: “Parana Materials combines innovative technology with strong international growth potential. Our investment supports its technical and commercial development while strengthening Limburg’s biobased materials cluster. Its presence at Brightlands Chemelot Campus creates new opportunities for collaboration and innovation, helping build lasting economic value for the region.”
New business activity and expertise for Limburg
Parana Materials will be based at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, where it will continue the development, scale-up and commercialisation of its materials. The existing polymerisation pilot plant will play an important role in this process. In addition to supporting Parana’s own developments, the facility can also be used for projects by other companies.
This means the impact extends beyond the growth of Parana itself. Knowledge, talent and infrastructure will be retained and further developed in Limburg. This creates new opportunities for collaboration with companies and knowledge institutions and contributes to new business activity and employment in the region.
The investment therefore supports not only Parana Materials’ next phase of growth, but also the further development of Chemelot and Limburg as a location where new sustainable materials technologies are developed, scaled up and brought to market.
In addition to LIOF’s investment, Parana Materials receives support from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and the Demonstration Energy and Climate Innovation (DEI+) programme. The founders are also investing in the company, while Avantium will remain involved as a minority shareholder.
