Regio Team Limburg: Driving Defence innovation in the Limburg region

In Limburg, the Ministry of Defence collaborates with regional partners to identify, test and scale innovative solutions more rapidly. This effort is fully aligned with the Defence Strategy for Industry and Innovation and the Limburg Defence Agenda.

Regio Team Limburg is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Province of Limburg, Brightlands Chemelot Campus and LIOF. Together, we connect entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions to concrete innovation challenges from Defence. In doing so, we accelerate the development of dual-use technologies that strengthen national security and the regional economy.

LIOF’s role

LIOF, the regional development agency for Limburg, supports entrepreneurs with expertise, networks and financing. Within Regio Team Limburg, LIOF links innovative startups, scale-ups and SMEs to Defence needs. We scout promising technologies, identify collaboration opportunities and help companies sharpen their value propositions. We also connect entrepreneurs with relevant partners and guide them towards suitable funding such as grants, risk capital or European programmes.

The central access point for collaboration with Defence

The physical MINDbase desk is located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. Companies can contact this desk with ideas or technologies that may be relevant to Defence. Here, entrepreneurs receive support in exploring opportunities, matchmaking, forming consortia for development and scaling, and securing funding—such as subsidies, risk capital through SecFund, or EU programmes. The goal: moving innovations from idea to application faster and more effectively.

Who is it for?

The desk is open to innovative companies and knowledge institutions, from startups to industrial players,that want to contribute to Defence-related technological solutions in one of the five strategic domains essential for the future military and economic strength of the Netherlands. These are smart materials, sensors, quantum technology, space technology, intelligent systems. Examples include drone and sensor applications, anti-jamming technologies, and other dual-use innovations.

We connect entrepreneurs with the right contacts within Defence and support follow-up steps such as testing, further development, matchmaking, scaling and financing.

Part of a national network

Regio Team Limburg is part of the national ODIN network, which connects regional innovation teams and coordinates alignment with Defence needs. Limburg holds an additional role as the national coordinator for the theme of smart materials.
