Limburg sets course for future-proof business parks

In the coming years, we in Limburg will be joining forces to make the industrial estates in our province more sustainable. This is due to the necessary climate challenges and the challenges in the energy market. The aim is to help Limburg companies located on industrial estates to tackle this together and with targeted support.

To achieve this goal, the Province of Limburg is implementing the SPUK scheme for making commercial real estate more sustainable. This scheme is primarily used to establish or increase the degree of organisation in Limburg's business parks for the purpose of sustainability. Part of this involves the creation of so-called energy hubs, where this can be a solution. The Limburg Development Company (LIOF), the Limburg Employers' Association (LWV) and the Midden Limburg Development Company (OML) have formed a consortium specifically for this purpose. They are working together with, among others, the Limburg municipalities, RES-en, Enexis and the national Programme for Sustainable Business Parks (PVB) Netherlands.

Energy hubs as a solution to grid congestion

The consortium will operate under this name. It will work closely with existing park management organisations or business associations in the industrial estates. This integrated collaboration offers great opportunities. The consortium is financed by the SPUK scheme.

We are all confronted with grid congestion: the overloading of the energy grid. Developing a future-proof business park that functions as an energy hub for its surroundings offers interesting opportunities. Strong energy demand and often also supply from various parties come together in a small area. Energy demand comes in many forms: electricity, heat and (sustainable) gas. The solution may lie in using the available energy more intelligently or utilising smart and sustainable generation or storage systems.

Project for the Sustainability of Industrial Estates in Limburg (VBL)

The consortium will operate under this name. It will work closely with existing park management organisations or business associations in the industrial estates. This integrated collaboration offers great opportunities. The consortium is financed by the SPUK scheme.

Doel

The aim is to establish or increase the level of organisation in at least 59 industrial estates in Limburg by 2027 in order to make these estates more sustainable. Within this, the consortium wants to realise an energy hub and/or projects related to climate adaptation or greening in at least ten estates. An ambitious but achievable goal.

Kick-off on 25 September

On 25 September, the consortium, Enexis and PVB met with the Limburg municipalities at the Provincial Government building. The aim was to inform each other about the approach and possibilities. The intended outcome was a starting list of business parks. Specially appointed ambassadors will soon be talking to the municipalities, park management organisations, and business associations in these areas about the status, possibilities, and wishes. Based on this, the action plan will be refined.
