Aerial Precision: the sky is (not) the limit
‘We had a goal and a vision in front of us.
We knew it was possible - so we made it possible.’
Vicente Payo Ollero, CEO and Founder of Aerial Precision
LIOF and Aerial Precision:
Aerial Precision contacted LIOF from the very beginning. Vicente: “LIOF has been with us since the start, supporting us with the LBDF and later through the LimburgMakers program. ”This is also LIOF’s first financial investment from its recently launched Limburg Startup Capital Fund. LIOF saw the potential from the start, says Niek Theunissen: “We were excited to support Aerial Precision, as their clever sensors contribute to the smarter design of processes and have a positive effect on a sustainable and healthy society.”

About Aerial Precision
When it comes to technology the sky often is the limit. Not for Aerial Precision. For this innovative startup the sky is far from the limit as they developed their 3D sensors with LiDAR technology for drone use – and so much more.
Aerial Precision: the sky is (not) the limit
Vicente Payo Ollero, CEO and Founder of Aerial Precision:
“We founded Aerial Precision three years ago with the ambition to dramatically improve the way in-formation is extracted from 3D maps, also known as ‘point clouds’. We design and make intelligence-driven 3D sensing systems and software. These can be mounted on commercial drones, mobile vehicles or operated as handheld devices using LiDAR technology.”
LiDAR technology …
A mouthful! Let’s try to get our feet on the ground around this one. LiDAR is short for Light Detection and Ranging. LiDAR technology uses sensors that eject laser beams: they shoot down to the ground and bounce back. The distance of the laser and back to the sensor is then measured and recorded.
… for endless creative possibilities
This technology is currently used for creating super detailed 3D maps and models of landscapes, build-ings, and human-made objects. Aerial Precision sees a whole new range of creative possibilities and application fields with this technology when it comes to planning and innovation.
So, how does it work exactly?
Vicente Payo Ollero is an electronic engineer from Seville, Spain. He explains: “I’ve been designing and operating high-end drone systems all around the world for the most part of my career. With Aerial Pre-cision we focus on delivering information that is ready to be used in decision making processes. This information is extracted from 3D spatial data or ‘point clouds’ captured with our sensors and analyzed with our software packages.”
'LIOF has become the main financial support of Aerial Precision.
From subsidies to the Limburg Startup Capital Fund'.
From the start
Aerial Precision contacted LIOF from the very beginning. Vicente: “LIOF has been with us since the start, supporting us with the LBDF and later through the LimburgMakers program. ”This is also LIOF’s first financial investment from its recently launched Limburg Startup Capital Fund. LIOF saw the poten-tial from the start, says Niek Theunissen: “We were excited to support Aerial Precision, as their clever sensors contribute to the smarter design of processes and have a positive effect on a sustainable and healthy society.”
Smart and extremely accurate
Vicente explains how this works: “In agriculture for instance, farmers can obtain in real-time the state of health of their fields and crops with our products and services. This allows them to optimize the use of water and fertilizer, resulting in a positive impact on the economy, environment and society.”
He gives another example: “Architecture studios can make very detailed and accurate 3D models of a house. They can use this to measure and extract any information they might need during the duration of the project. Smart and extremely accurate!”
DronePort opens doors
Aerial Precision also collaborated with the Limburg Investment Company LRM, “to further develop the commercial side of our company”, adds Vicente. “LRM has important connections with the drone in-dustry. Having access to their network and DronePort in Sint-Truiden helps us to grow our company.” Niek adds: “With this unique product Aerial Precision aligns well with the knowledge-based ecosystem in both Dutch and Belgian Limburg. We see huge potential in this team and their vision and we are hap-py for this to be our first joint investment, together with our Belgian counterpart LRM.”
'We had a goal and a vision in front of us.
We knew it was possible - so we made it possible.'
With precision towards precision
Aerial Precision also put quite some precision into the buildup of their company. Vicente: “We dedicated the first three years of the company to research and development of our hardware - with very little commercial activity. The goal was to produce a 3D sensing system that could offer a level of accuracy that is acceptable by most potential users ánd reduces costs by one tenth of the existing solutions.” A challenge? Yes. Impossible? Absolutely not.
Ready to go!
Vicente is proud of the result: “A LiDAR system that combines a commercially available LiDAR sensor and our own artificial intelligence unit. This intelligence unit can understand the environment it captures and uses that information to improve the level of detail and accuracy of our 3D maps.” Aerial Precision is now ready for their first customers. Vicente: “We expect to have our first sales before the end of the year and reach a break-even point in 2024.”
Don’t wait until the last moment
Does Vicente have any tips for other entrepreneurs who want to do business in a more sustainable, smarter way? Vicente: “Define your products, processes and services with sustainability and circularity in mind from the very beginning. Don’t wait until the last moment to do so.”
