Brightlands Startup League builds on regional success and sets its sights beyond Limburg

Brightlands Startup League is a program for entrepreneurial students and startups that want to turn their ideas into businesses. This guidance is important because turning a promising idea into a successful business requires different things at every stage. A student entrepreneur wants to explore whether an idea offers opportunities and how to start a business. A startup, for example, is looking for testing facilities, initial customers, and funding. A scale-up needs new markets, collaboration partners, and capital for further international growth. In Limburg, the knowledge, resources, financing, and a powerful innovation network come together to help entrepreneurs take these steps.

The Brightlands Startup League makes this support accessible. This joint initiative of the Province of Limburg, the Brightlands campuses, Maastricht University, and LIOF offers a single point of entry for student entrepreneurs, startups, and scale-ups. Entrepreneurs can join at whatever stage they are in, with support tailored to their ambitions and growth needs.
The four Brightlands campuses form a shared innovation hub: science and entrepreneurship converge there around food, chemistry, health, and data & AI. It is precisely the connection between these fields that offers opportunities for new applications.

Limburg Innovates Without Limits

In the coming period, the Brightlands Startup League aims to raise awareness of the region’s strengths beyond Limburg. The goal is to attract more talent, entrepreneurs, investors, and companies, and to forge new connections. In doing so, Limburg will continue to build a region where innovations are born and startups are given the space to grow into mature companies.

Growing in Limburg and Across the Border

Alkyl Recycling, Smobya, and Simurghy, among others, demonstrate how Limburg fosters the growth of innovations. At the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Alkyl Recycling founder Melvin Kizito is developing a recycling process for disposable diapers. With guidance and financial support from LIOF, the company made the transition from laboratory research to a pilot setup, with a pilot plant as the next step.

The Hungarian company Smobya has chosen Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo as its home base. The company develops fermentation-based alternatives to leather and plastic and is working on further scaling up its operations. An investment from LIOF, Joanna Invests, and Earthstar is making the construction of a demonstration plant possible.

At the same time, innovations from Limburg are finding their way abroad: Simurghy, affiliated with Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, collaborated with the Limburg-based machine builder GDO to develop simulators that allow heart surgeons to practice complex procedures. Investments from LIOF and Percival Participations helped further develop and expand the technology for international use. In this way, Limburg brings together the promotion of entrepreneurship, the scaling up of technology, and international growth.

Encounters That Accelerate Growth

During the third Brightlands Startup League Year Event, the power of the collective network came together in practice. Entrepreneur stories, interactive sessions, and discussions gave participants the opportunity to exchange knowledge and make connections for their next step in growth.

Sixteen promising startups presented their innovations and growth ambitions: Aetheria, ALIA, Chiron, Healthplus.AI, Heedvane, Lynno, Mindsetor, PEYEONEER, ReSpindle, Smobya, Snack Rebels, SOLiTHOR, VoxDiscover, XMEM, Wolf Batteries, and WorkFlowRobot. Their pitches provided a platform for new solutions with the potential to make an impact beyond Limburg as well.
