Biotech startup Silicozyme enters its next growth phase with investment from LIOF and Brightlands Venture Partners

Silicozyme, a promising biotech startup based at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, is taking an important step towards commercialization. Thanks to an investment from Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP) and the Limburg Startup Capital Fund (LSCF), managed by LIOF, the company can accelerate the market introduction of its innovative technology for more efficient protein manufacturing. In doing so, Silicozyme is not only advancing its own growth ambitions but also strengthening Limburg's position as a leading region for industrial biotechnology.

Proteins play a vital role in a wide range of applications, from industrial enzymes and sustainable manufacturing processes to biologic medicines. However, protein production is often complex and expensive. In particular, protein purification is one of the most time-consuming and costly stages of the process, accounting for as much as 80% of total production costs. This is exactly where Silicozyme aims to make a difference.

Smarter bioprocesses for more efficient protein manufacturing

Silicozyme has developed an integrated technology platform that makes protein manufacturing simpler, more cost-effective and easier to scale. By combining AI-driven enzyme design with innovative bioprocessing and purification technologies, the company standardizes a significant part of the production process. This reduces the need for product-specific process development, shortens development timelines and enables more efficient protein production without requiring major modifications to existing manufacturing facilities.
Initially, the technology is focused on applications in industrial biotechnology, where new manufacturing processes can be adopted relatively quickly. In the longer term, Silicozyme also sees opportunities in other markets, including the production of biologic medicines.

Investment accelerates the path to market

The investment from BVP and LIOF marks the beginning of a new growth phase for Silicozyme. The funding will be used to expand the company's research and development activities, strengthen its intellectual property portfolio and accelerate the commercialization of its technology platform. In addition, Silicozyme will launch collaborative projects with industrial partners to further validate and scale the technology for commercial applications.

"At LIOF, we invest in innovative companies that translate scientific breakthroughs into economic and societal impact," says Jeffrey Lutje Spelberg, Investment Manager at LIOF. "Silicozyme combines scientific excellence with a clear industrial application. In doing so, the company contributes to the continued growth of Limburg's biotechnology ecosystem and the advancement of sustainable bioprocessing."

Strengthening Limburg's biotechnology ecosystem

Silicozyme is based at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, where entrepreneurs, knowledge institutions and investors work together on innovations that contribute to a more sustainable and competitive economy. Through this investment, LIOF and Brightlands Venture Partners are supporting not only the growth of a promising company but also the continued development of Limburg's biotechnology ecosystem.
By investing in innovative companies at an early stage of growth, LIOF helps transform scientific knowledge into new businesses, high-quality employment and lasting economic impact for the Limburg region.
