Rong Wang, co-founder and CEO of EGGXPERT, explains.
“We believe that skincare is not only an experience to express yourself, but also a way to connect with nature. Extraordinary biological functions
“The egg processing industry produces millions of tons of eggshell waste every year. Especially industrial (large) bakeries, restaurants and food (egg) processors. This goes to the landfill or they pay to have it collected, for example by municipal waste management. Not only does this mean additional costs, but they also throw away a tremendous hidden value. Because eggshells and eggshell membrane have extraordinary biological functions. Sin!”
Hidden treasure
“We therefore decided to revive this forgotten treasure full of valuable ingredients. Combining scientific evidence with traditional wisdom, we develop eggshell membrane into rich facial care products.”

From masks to serums
Rong Wang explains how LIOF helped them. “We received a Proof of Principle (POP) grant from the LimburgAgrofood program for our first project 'Towards skin care with biomass eggshell membranes'. In this project we use eggshell membrane proteins in face masks. In addition, we received the innovation project subsidy from LIOF for the project "REVEAL the robust value of eggshell membrane". This makes it possible to produce liquid serum based on eggshell membrane for multiple cosmetic products such as lotions. Focused on more end users and a larger market. We still have so much to develop!”
Important doors open
The senior researcher in regenerative medicine is pleased with LIOF's support. Rong Wang: “Of course, the subsidies make it financially possible to continue our journey. But I am also very grateful for the tremendous support we received in so many other areas. When writing grants, shaping our business, sharing knowledge and not to mention the networking. This opened so many important doors.”
From Frisian eggshells …
“In this way we have built a complete value chain for our company. For example, with our supplier DEPP B.V., a subsidiary of Frisian Egg B.V., we also work together with Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM) and Chemelot Innovation and Learning Labs (CHILL). In addition, we work closely with Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Cube Design Museum in the field of marketing and promotion, actively including young creatives in our product design and marketing team.”
… till second skin
Rong Wang is looking forward enthusiastically. “We are proud of our first biobased face mask SCND SKIN. This product is now in the production phase and is expected to be ready for a market launch in the summer of 2021. We are also eager to develop more sustainable products from eggshell waste.”

Finally, Rong Wang is happy to share a few more wise words. “Wanting to become an entrepreneur and being an entrepreneur are two different emotions. Enjoy the journey and take advantage of networking on the go. You will experience successes and achieve milestones. But you will also face frustration and rejection. Learn from this and choose new paths where necessary to achieve your sustainable goal. In this way you will become a better entrepreneur.”
